Before you start

A little preparation can make your knitting project much easier.

It's easy to get excited and just start, but it's good to have a few small things under control before the first stitch. Here, we've gathered the most important things to consider before starting a new knitting project.

Choose the right size

Start by figuring out which size you need to knit. Look at the measurement chart in the pattern and compare the measurements with a garment you already own, or measure yourself.

Don't choose a size solely based on the size you usually wear. Garments can have different fits and ease, so the measurements in the pattern are the most important starting point.

Choose yarn and color

Use the yarn recommended in the pattern if you want a result that is as close as possible to the design.

If you choose a different yarn quality, it is important to consider factors such as yardage, thickness, fiber content, and gauge. Two yarns can look similar on the ball but behave very differently when knitted.

And of course – choose a color you want to use! After all, you are the one who will be living with the garment.

What needles do you need?

In the pattern, you will find information about which needles you need. Check both needle size and type – some patterns are knitted in the round with circular needles, while others require double-pointed needles or other needle types.

Remember that the needle size may need to be adjusted to achieve the correct gauge.

Read through the pattern

Before you begin, we recommend reading through the entire pattern. This will give you a better idea of what you need to do and perhaps avoid some surprises along the way.

Pay special attention to information about gauge, sizes, yarn quantity, and the techniques used.

It can also be useful to mark which size you are going to knit, so it's easier to follow the correct numbers throughout the pattern.

What do the symbols and abbreviations mean?

Knitting patterns can contain many abbreviations and symbols. It might seem a bit confusing at first, but you'll quickly get used to them.

Find the explanation of the abbreviations in the pattern before you start, and take one thing at a time. You don't need to know everything beforehand – the most important thing is to know where to find the explanation when you need it.

How much yarn do I need?

In the pattern, you will find the recommended yarn quantity for each size. Check this before you start, and make sure you have enough yarn for the entire project.

If you are knitting with a different yarn quality, you should not just look at the number of balls. The yardage of the yarn can vary greatly from quality to quality, so instead, look at how many meters you need.

It's also a good idea to have a little extra yarn if you're unsure – especially if you're knitting with a color that might be difficult to get again.

Knit a swatch

We know it might not be the most fun thing to start with, but a swatch can save you a lot of time later.

Gauge determines whether your garment will have the correct size and shape. Therefore, knit a swatch before you begin and check that the gauge matches the pattern.

Once you have control over size, yarn, needles, and gauge, you are ready to start. Then it's just a matter of enjoying the process – one stitch at a time.
